My Role:

Interaction Designer

Background

“E-store” is the e-commerce website of Symantec which sells various products of Symantec. The application SymCommMonitor monitors and displays the health status of various components of e-store. This product is a web based application for monitoring the health of an e-commerce system, optimized for iPad. Client is Symantec.

Scope of Work

The work involved redesigning the existing portal. I worked as an individual contributor. The scope of work was to provide high level recommendations for incorporating all the features of web application, to be optimized for iPad. This project was good challenge in the sense that I had to come up with wireframes within 5 days from date of commencement and this was my first iPad related project.

Approach and Solution

Initially, I interacted with the client to get quick understanding of the user base and domain; simultaneously learning about usage of various iPad UI patterns. Based on this understanding, I came up with the wireframe design, incorporating native iPad UI elements wherever appropriate. The solution included the following:

  • The existing web application was analyzed and was made as simple as possible.

  • Created an appealing look and feel that meets the environment it is used in.

  • Designed and developed the complete User Experience in accordance with usability standards for iPad.

Benefits

  • All the features of website were incorporated in the iPad application.

  • UI elements similar to the ones in native iPad apps(like pop over, split view, segmented controls etc.) are used in the application, so that the user would “Relate” and “Use” them with ease.

  • Created an application that was found intuitive and more usable by users and client.

Result and Next Steps

The client liked the output, they gave go ahead for further refinement and also sponsored a visual designer, with whom I collaborated and reviewed the final designs.
